The benefits of memory care community living versus in-home care

According to AARP, more than 95% seniors want to stay in their homes as long as possible, even if they need help with daily activities. After all, home is comfortable and familiar, and they are surrounded by memories and settings that make them feel safe.

While in-home care has become more widely available, this option is not typically the best fit for someone living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias. The specialized care and attention needed for those with cognitive challenges cannot always be properly provided within a home setting.

Here are some key points to consider as you compare in-home care versus memory care in a community:

Cost: The average cost of 24/7 in-home care can range from $3,000 to $17,000 per month based on the type of licensure and assistance provided. This does not include normal expenses such as mortgage/rent, taxes, insurance, utilities, upkeep and food. However, monthly costs at Tuscan Gardens Memory Care range from $4,000 – $6,000 per month and are all-inclusive.

Socialization & Activities: Seniors at home can feel isolated and have fewer opportunities to participate in activities with others. In a memory care community, residents are in the company of neighbors with an engaging array of events available daily. More importantly, at Tuscan Gardens, activities are designed specifically for residents with cognitive challenges helping them to capitalize on their remaining abilities, feel more independent and potentially slow down further deterioration.

Dining & Nutrition: Having in-home care often results in seniors eating alone, dining on prepackaged meals with little nutritional value. Following dietary guidelines or accommodating special diets can be a challenge. At Tuscan Gardens, dining not only includes daily table service with freshly prepared chef-inspired menu options that pay special attention to nutritional and dietary needs, but also offers a more family-style experience.

Medical Assistance & Staffing: With in-home care, the family is responsible for overseeing an outside caregiver. This includes ensuring the caregiver shows up when needed and has no criminal record or past issues. The family could potentially even be liable for any injuries sustained by the caregiver while in the home. Even with in-home care, there may still be anxiety about if/when help will be available in case of an emergency.

A memory care community can alleviate these concerns. Tuscan Gardens has a team of qualified, vetted and trained staff – including a licensed nurse – on-site 24 hours a day. A secure neighborhood setting provides further peace of mind for families.
